See and remove the metadata of a photo

Add a photo and see everything it carries: where it was taken, when, with which phone and who is listed as the author. One tap removes the location or all the data before you share the photo.

  • Free
  • No account
  • iPhone and Android photos

Your photos are processed on your phone or computer and stay with you from start to finish.

    01

    What photo metadata is

Besides the image, every photo stores a block of data written by the camera: the date and time, the phone model, the shot settings and, when location is on, the exact coordinates of the place. That block is called EXIF.

Some apps add another block, called XMP, with a title, author, keywords and copyright. You cannot see this data in the picture, but it travels with the file everywhere.

    When to remove the location

    • Before you post photos taken at home on Marketplace or in a group.
    • When you show a job done at a client's home on social media.
    • With photos of your kids or your family that you share with more people.
    • When you send photos as a document on WhatsApp or by email: they arrive with all their data.

With your business photos it works the other way around: there you want the location in. That is what Geotag photos is for.

    Frequently asked questions

It is the data the camera stores inside the file: date, time, phone model, shot settings and, often, the location. That data travels with the file even though you cannot see it in the picture.

Add the photo to this tool. If it has coordinates, they show on the card and on the map, with a link to open the spot in Google Maps.

When you send a photo on WhatsApp as an image, the app compresses it and strips almost all the data. If you send it as a document, the original file arrives with all its data, location included.

In JPG, PNG and WebP the image stays the same: only the data goes. iPhone HEIC photos become high quality JPGs.

The image, the color profile and the orientation, so it looks the same as before. The location, date, camera, author and internal thumbnails go.
